A Meta-taxonomy for Museums

For a secret project I’m working on, I need a taxonomy of types of museums (that narrows it done a bit, doesn’t it?)

Because none really seems to exist, I took a stab at one:

History
	General
	Cultural
	Natural History
	Nature Center
	Transportation
		General
		Aviation
		Automobile
		Railway
	Historic House
	Historic Site
	Military
	Maritime
		Military
		General

Arts
	Fine Arts
	Decorative Arts
	Modern Arts

Science
	General
	Computers
	Aviation (Air / Space)
		Military
		General
	Planetarium

Specialized
	Medium
		Photography
		Film
	Object-specific (e.g. Victorian Doll Museum)
	Corporate (e.g. Jell-O museum)
	Personal
	Children's

Natural
	Zoo
	Arboretum
	Botanic Garden
	Aquarium

Any comments would be welcome (I expect the taxonomy to sort-of come live as data gets added to said project, but I’d like to have at least a start!

  1. A Taxonomy of Museum Types
A flat list where each museum fits under multiple categories will probably handle all the odd museums of the world a little better (and there are many odd museums).

A reshuffle of your list plus a few extras gives:

    Arboretum
    Agriculture
    Arts
    Automobile
    Aviation
    Botanic Garden
    Children’s
    Computers
    Corporate (focused on a company/organisation)
    Cultural History
    Decorative Arts
    Event-specific
    Film
    Fine Arts
    Historic House
    Historic Site
    History
    Maritime
    Modern Arts
    Military
    National
    Natural History
    Nature Center
    Object-specific (e.g. Victorian Doll Museum)
    Open Air
    Personal (focused on a person/family)
    Place-specific
    Photography
    Planetarium
    Railway
    Science
    Space
    Technology
    Transport
    Zoo

    Examples:
Picasso Museum = Personal, Arts, Modern Art

A Taxonomy of People in Museum (and what they did as children)

Tinkerer – Disassembled/reassembled the family grandfather clock but had one piece left over
Organizer – Sorted their Dr Suess books alphabetically by Title
Collector – Collected all 24 “The Empire Strikes Back” cards from a cornflakes packet promotion
Designer – Believed Arthur Conan Doyle was right about the fairies
Convervator – Repaired matchstick Eiffel Tower found in a yard sale
